Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce

Andy is back

Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce It was founded in 1991 as the world’s first museum dedicated to Andy Warhol. Today, it is the only museum in Europe specialising in Andy Warhol. There are only two Warhol museums in the world, one in Pittsburgh, USA, and the other in Medzilaborce. Its location in Medzilaborce is linked to the artist’s family roots. His parents came from nearby Miková, and it was here that Warhol’s family wished to preserve the artist’s connection with his ancestors.

What you’ll see at the Andy Warhol Museum

Following extensive refurbishment, the museum reopened to the public in September 2026. Today, it brings together original art, the story of the Warhol family, modern architecture and interactive technology. It is therefore not just a place for art connoisseurs. A visit is also of interest to families with children, visitors to the region and people who know Andy Warhol primarily as one of the icons of Pop Art.

Renovácia múzea ponúka nové expozičné a vzdelávacie priestory, moderné technológie a interaktívne prvky.

An interactive museum that’s not just for looking at

The new exhibition makes use of digital and multimedia elements. Visitors can see a realistic hologram of Andy Warhol, moving robotic Brillo Boxes, a digital iconostasis referencing his Rusyn roots, immersive visual environments and an interactive digital screen print. Here, you can transform a photo from your mobile into a portrait inspired by Warhol’s work.

The building itself is also of interest. The museum’s new design is characterised by a striking steel structure weighing approximately 250 tonnes, the integration of the interior with the exterior, and a green roof accessible to the public. It has transformed the building’s original appearance from the ground up into an architectural landmark. An amphitheatre seating around 100 visitors has also been created on the roof. The museum’s spaces are designed not only for permanent exhibitions but also for temporary exhibitions, workshops, screenings and concerts. It also features black-box theatres designed to host other cultural events.

Why is the Warhol Museum in Medzilaborce?

Medzilaborce is not associated with the name of Andy Warhol by chance. It is this very region that his family came from, and to which the story of his ancestors is linked. The museum was therefore established not only as a space showcasing the work of this world-famous artist, but also as a place that preserves and highlights his connection to the region.

If you’d like to explore Warhol’s story beyond the museum, you can combine your trip with a visit to Miková and other towns in the Rusyn and Andy Warhol Region. Andy Warhol’s work takes on a specific geographical and cultural context here, which can be further explored at other locations throughout the region. The museum can therefore serve as the starting point for a day-long or weekend-long exploration of the region.
