Perhaps the most beautiful landmark of the eastern Slovak town of Medzilaborce is the cultural monument of the Church of the Holy Spirit. The temple rises on an elevation in the centre of the town and its architecture and massive building attracts the attention of every visitor. Inside it is literally a feast for the eyes.
This majestic Orthodox church was Built by in the middle of the 20th century, in 1949as memorial to fallen soldiers in both world wars on the site of an old wooden church. That is why the place was named the Memorial of the Fallen Heroes - Slavs of the First and Second World War.

The construction of the temple was not easy due to the lack of building materials and funds. However, thanks to the support of the then Minister of Defence of the Czechoslovak Republic and later the President of the Republic Ludvík Svoboda, the construction could be realized.
The Temple of the Holy Spirit was made in Old Russian Renaissance style and with his unique architecture and captivating interior decoration is rightfully the landmark of the city.

In the course of a few years, the church was destroyed by weather conditions and therefore its overhaul was necessary.
In addition to a local craftsman, Dimitrios Leussis, a Greek artist living in the USA, also participated in the repair. This well-known icon painter executed the painting of the entire temple with a remarkable composition of colors of up to 360 icons on an area of 1,600 m2.
The unique dominant architecture of the temple and the paintings create a mystical environment full of beautiful colours that fascinates all visitors.
