From mountain peaks to medieval UNESCO treasures and the world of Andy Warhol
DAY 1 — Touch down beneath the High Tatras
Your adventure begins at Poprad-Tatry Airport, with Slovakia’s highest mountains almost immediately in sight. Head straight towards Strbské Pleso, one of the best-known mountain lakes in the High Tatras. At 1,346 metres above sea level, it offers an easy introduction to the mountains without requiring a demanding hike. Walk around the lake, enjoy the panorama and, during the summer season, experience its long tradition of boating.
Continue to Starý Smokovec, the oldest tourist centre in the High Tatras. From here, take the funicular to Hrebienok, a popular starting point for walks towards mountain huts and the Studený potok waterfalls. Those with more time can walk to Rainer's cottage, the oldest mountain hut in the Tatras.
Finish your first day back in Poprad with an evening in Spišská Sobota. This historic district is one of Slovakia’s best-preserved medieval urban ensembles, with Renaissance burgher houses gathered around an atmospheric square and the Church of St George at its heart.
Stay overnight: Poprad or the High Tatras.
DAY 2 — Step into the UNESCO world of Spiš
After breakfast, head to Levoča, one of the historic treasures of the Spiš region. Its walled centre and the work of Master Paul of Levoča have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2009. The centrepiece is the Church of St James, home to the 18.62-metre-high late-Gothic wooden altar of Master Paul, the tallest altar of its kind in the world. Around it stretches Námestie Majstra Pavla with historic burgher houses, the old town hall and the famous Cage of Shame.
In the afternoon continue to Spiš Castle and Spišská Kapitula. Covering more than four hectares, Spiš Castle is one of the largest ruined castle complexes in Central Europe and forms part of another UNESCO-listed cultural landscape. From its walls, the scale of the Spiš countryside becomes part of the experience.
Then leave the familiar postcard landscapes behind and travel east. The scenery gradually changes as you enter the land of Rusyn culture and Andy Warhol’s family roots.
Stay overnight: Medzilaborce or the surrounding Upper Zemplín area.
DAY 3 — Meet Andy Warhol where his story began
Save the most unexpected experience for your final day. The Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce reopened after a major three-year reconstruction in September 2026. Founded in 1991, it was the first museum in the world devoted exclusively to Andy Warhol and today is the only specialised Warhol museum in Europe. Its location is no coincidence: Warhol’s parents were Rusyns from the nearby village of Miková.
The renovated museum combines original artworks and personal objects with a completely new visitor experience. More than 400 works and objects are complemented by interactive technologies including a realistic Warhol hologram, moving Brillo Boxes, a digital iconostasis referring to his Rusyn roots, immersive environments and a digital screen-printing experience that can turn your own photograph into a Warhol-style portrait. The building itself has changed too, with a new floor, a walkable steel façade, green roof and amphitheatre.
Allow at least two hours for the museum and then take a little more time to discover Medzilaborce beyond Warhol. The town’s Church of the Holy Spirit contains hundreds of icons, while the nearby mini open-air museum presents traditional Rusyn houses and even a replica of the house associated with Warhol’s parents in Miková.
Then return across the Prešov Region towards Poprad-Tatry Airport – after three days that have taken you from alpine landscapes through the Middle Ages to one of the biggest names in 20th-century art.
