The stone statue of the literary figure of the good soldier Švejk, who wandered through Upper Zemplín to the Halič front, can be found symbolically at the railway station in Humenne. The train became his home for a long time. The author of the statue is the sculptor Jaroslav Drotár from Humenne.
The likeness of Švejk in a smaller version can also be found on the square in Humenne near the Fountain of Love. There is also a 52-kilometre long cycling route named after him. It follows the railway line, which was used by the frontline troops during the First World War. It starts in the Laborecka saddle near the village of Palota and ends just in front of the statue of Soldier Švejk near the Humenne railway station.
This mythical character is also connected with the seasonal Soldier Svejk Train, which connects the Slovak and Polish sides by rail during the summer. The line runs through Lupkov Tunnelwhich crosses the national border and was of great strategic importance in times of war. You have a unique opportunity to take the historical route to the towns of Lupkov, Sanok or Rzeszów. You can also board the train at the main station in Medzilaborce, where you will be escorted on your way by a wooden statue of Švejk.
