Above the town of Sabinov rises Šanec. It is the name for a part of a wooded hill right next to the Torysa river. Šanec is mainly used for recreation and because of its proximity to the town (entrance directly from the main road) it is a popular place in every season. The foot of the hill can be reached by all kinds of paths, the routes are known as "Švablovské chodničky". On the top there is a plain, where in September 2020 was inaugurated "Lookout tower on the Chance". The construction of the lookout tower was realized thanks to the financial support of the Government Office of the Slovak Republic, as a means to promote tourism and increase the attractiveness of the suburban forest park Švabľovka.
The lookout tower is at an altitude of 465 m above sea level. The location and the maximum height of the lookout tower were limited due to the nearby Ražňany airport, its protection zones and the safety of air traffic. The lookout tower is 11 m high, has two floors, wooden construction, where the most modern woodworking technology was used. The designer of the project was Ing. Juraj Lovich, and the contractor Interbau s.r.o.
At the tower you will find a seating area from which a beautiful view of the whole panorama of the Šariš region from Šariš Castle Hill, Hradová, Zobrana, Malkovská hora, through Makovica, Bodoň, Lysá, Čierna Hora to Šimonka.
Below the lookout tower there is another place to rest, the famous "Crosses on the Šanci", which are part of the Švabľovka Forest Park, which is waiting for its revitalization.
