Hodošík - the highest military cemetery in Slovakia

Northeastern border of Slovakia. A place that had strategic military importance in history.

One of them is located na vrchu Hodošík v sninskom okrese, v nadmorskej výške 885 m n. m., čo z neho robí najvyššie položený vojnový cintorín z prvej svetovej vojny na Slovensku. A total of 668 soldiers are buried there in 86 war graves, of which 40 are individual, 34 communal and 12 mass graves. The names of the soldiers are unknown.

The cemetery has a circular plan with a diameter of 67 m. The graves are placed in five rows. There is a central cross at the top. It is believed that mainly Russian soldiers are buried in this war cemetery, which is why the locals call it the "Russian Cemetery". There is another cemetery in the cadastre of the displaced village of Veľká Poľana, which is located on the route of the Carpathian Highway cycle path. 340 soldiers found their final resting place there. After the war, the fate of the cemetery was on the margins of society. At the turn of the 1950s, the cemetery was taken care of by pupils from the Topole Primary School. In time, this too ceased. In 1971, a Greek-Catholic parish priest Myron Podhajecký from Veľká Poľana, who was transferred by the communists out of the then district of Humenné, performed a memorial service for the dead soldiers at Hodošík.

During the years 1994 to 2004, the Poloniny National Park Administration organized brigade work to save this memorial site. Since 2006, the maintenance of the cemetery has been provided by the Municipal Office in Stakčín through the Veľká Polana Hunting Association. Currently, all graves are well identifiable in the field and the cemetery is maintained.
