City park Tatranská Lomnica

The municipal park in Tatranská Lomnica is the oldest park in the High Tatras and its surroundings. Its history dates back to 1892. It is located in the heart of the picturesque mountain village of Tatranská Lomnica. There are typical Tatra plant species in it. It is a popular place for daily walks with a magnificent view of the Tatra mountains dominated by the Lomnicky Peak. Cultural and social events for the general public are held in the park. The park also includes an educational trail "The Way of Trees".

A pleasant diversification of relaxation in the park, especially in the summer months, is the brook that meanders through the western side of the park. Another popular water feature is the fountain in the shape of a stylised flower. Mud paths weave through the park and lead to a wooden amphitheatre with benches.

Weather booth

In the park in front of the Kuszmann's Bazaar (former Tatry Hotel) a music pavilion was built in 1896, imported from Budapest. After the Second World War, a weather station was installed in its place, with a thermo-, hydro- and barograph. The original station was destroyed by fire. In 2020, a replica of the station was built on its foundations, no longer equipped with measuring instruments.

Borrow a book

Another attraction of the park is the book booth, where you can borrow, read and return a book, or exchange it for another one. Original paintings for the book booth in the park, by the pond and in the High Tatras were made by clever pupils from the Primary Art School in Tatranská Lomnica.

More about the trip

The municipal park in Tatranská Lomnica is an example of typical Tatra flora. It contains the most common Tatra plant species. The climatic conditions in the Tatras are unsuitable for the growth of common ornamental flowers, but in spite of this there are several flowering areas in the park, flowering mainly in yellow and purple colours. In the park grow typical Tatra tree species such as Norway spruce (Picea abies), which grows to a height of 40 to 60 m and can live 200 to 300 years. The trunk of the tree can be 1 -1.5 m in diameter and the crown is conical in shape. The branches droop at the ends and the bark is reddish-brown to grey with thin scales. Larch deciduous (Larix decidua) is another Tatra deciduous conifer, growing up to 40 m high. The cones are cylindrical to conical in shape, often in large numbers on the branches. In autumn it falls off, before turning a deep yellow colour. In the park there are also Scots pine - pine ( Pinus sylvestris) an evergreen coniferous tree growing to a height of about 30 m. The needles are 4-8 cm long and grow in bundles of two from a single bundle. The white fir (Abies alba) belongs to the very tall trees of the Tatra Mountains, it can grow up to 50m high. In addition to coniferous trees, there is also a deciduous deciduous tree in the park, growing to a height of 30 m Aspen poplar - aspen (Populus tremula), which is known for its typical leaf flutter with a characteristic rustle. It has a sparse and broad crown, the trunk is slightly bent, the bark is smooth, slightly sticky, grey-green in colour.
