About 100 metres below the Nový Smokovec Spa is the Evangelical Church, which was built in 1887. The main initiator of its construction was Dr. Szontagh, but several individuals, municipalities and evenjelic congregations also contributed generous donations. Gedeon Majunke was the designer and builder of the church in Neo-Romanesque style with Gothic elements. The Szontagh family established a crypt under the church in recognition of their merits. Two prematurely deceased wives, two minor children and, on 6 December 1899, Dr. Mikuláš Szontagh himself were buried here.
