The neo-Gothic Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary (from 1888) is a dominant feature in Stary Smokovec. The church is built in the alpine style with its characteristic half-timbered masonry. The gables of the church are richly carved and decorated. The roof also forms the vault of the church. The architecture is composed in neo-Gothic style and its composition fits perfectly into the high mountain environment. It ranks among the most beautiful sacral buildings not only in Stary Smokovec, but also in the High Tatras.
The wooden Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary was built by the Bishop of Spiš Juraj Császka at the request of Archpriestess Klotilda. The project was designed by the architect Gedeon Majunke from Spišská Sobota. The solemn consecration of the church took place on 26 August 1888. A year later, a picture of the Holy Family painted on glass and a picture of St. George were installed in the transept. The stained glass depicting St. George bears the coat of arms of Bishop George and Császka. In 1959 the church was reconstructed and a new tower was built. In 1977, the stained-glass windows, made by the academic painter Vincent Hložník with his wife and daughter, were put into effect.
Near the church there is also a wooden gazebo with a bench on which John Paul II sat during his visit to Slovakia.
On the altar is a beautiful statue Gothic Madonna of Ruskinovce, the original of which is now in the National Museum in Bratislava. The facsimile of the Madonna was created by prof. Maria Spoločníkova from Košice in 1983. The sculpture artistically fits very well into the architecture of the neo-Gothic altar, of which it forms an inseparable part. The overall decoration has been composed to fit directly into one of Slovakia's greatest tourist sites, which is visited by many people from all over the world. Therefore, the saints depicted in the stained glass windows represent the universality of the whole Church.
