The first shop in Tatranská Lomnica comes to life again!

Tatranská Lomnica, August 2023 - It has been more than a hundred years since the inhabitants and visitors of Tatranská Lomnica could buy sporting goods or food in the Kuszmann's Bazaar. Already on 12 August its gates will open again! Kuszmann's Bazaar will welcome visitors to its artisan bakery and patisserie and restaurant PaB [pub] in August.

Július Kuszmann from Kežmarok built his first shop in the park in Tatranská Lomnica in 1896. It stood by the road from Tatranské Matliary to Smokovec in the area between the Spa House and the Lomnica Hotel. In 1904 it was replaced by a large brick new bazaar with living quarters, surrounded on two sides by a covered wooden veranda. The building was nationalised in the 1950s, but food was still sold there. Later, the shop became a recreational facility. In the 1990s, the building underwent extensive reconstruction. An additional section was added, which significantly increased the accommodation capacity.

Almost 30 years later, in 2022, the hotel building was purchased by Mores Resort a.s., which also owns Hotel Lomnica, and began a major reconstruction in cooperation with the Heritage Office. In the Kuszmann Bazaar, a craft bakery and confectionery, the PaB [pub] restaurant and apartments found their place.

During the reconstruction we were sensitive to the need to preserve the original form of Kuszmann's Bazaar and were inspired by the original idea of Julius Kuszmann. In the past, the shop was not only a place for shopping, but above all for meetings and friendly conversations. That's why we opened the first craft bakery and pastry shop and restaurant PaB [pub] with craft beer from the Pálffy Brauerei brewery from St. George in Kuszmann's Bazaar, so that people could meet for good food and beer, Miriama Vojčíková, Operations Director of Hotel Lomnica and Kuszmann's Bazaar, introduces the idea of Kuszmann's Bazaar.

The bakery in Kuszmann's Bazaar bakes sourdough bread and other pastries in a baking oven every day.

In addition to sourdough breads made from wheat, rye or wholemeal flour, we also prepare beetroot bread for our visitors. It is softer and has a typical burgundy colour, explains Jozef Brudňák, Executive Pastry Chef of the Bakery and Patisserie in Kuszmann's Bazaar. The bakery and patisserie is ready to bake savoury and sweet pastries, cakes and tarts to order and produce exclusive pralines.

On the first floor there is the PaB [pub] restaurant, where beer from the Pálffy Brauerei brewery from St. George is on tap. Historical sources are silent about the visit of Franz Joseph I and his wife Sissi to the High Tatras. On the way by train from Bardejov, where Sissi had evidently been, they could theoretically have stopped for a while in Tatranská Lomnica.

The Habsburgs are also a great inspiration for our other projects. In Hotel Lomnica, guests can still see a unique replica of the coronation dress of the legendary Sissi. That is why we toyed with the idea of what would happen if Franz Joseph could not resist a good beer and stopped by our restaurant, explains Miriama Vojčíková the presence of the figure of the emperor in the restaurant. František Jozef is poised to become a new photo spot in Tatranská Lomnica. Good beer inherently goes with good food, which is taken care of at PaB [pub]-e by chef Jaroslav Bachleda. In the Tatras you don't have to have only bryndzové halušky. Our cuisine is extremely rich and we like to draw from it. V The restaurant's menu includes lángos or beer goulash made from pork cheeks, as well as zucchini soup with potato jatkas, for example. Since we have a regular guest, František Josef, we couldn't resist and put a typical bun with leberkäse on the menu. In the past, this too belonged to the cuisine of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, of which we were also a part, Jaroslav Bachleda presents the menu of dishes.

For the visitors of Tatranská Lomnica, the possibilities of where to go for a good meal or beer have expanded again. The chances that you will meet and take a photo with Emperor Franz Joseph are more than one hundred percent. The grand opening of the Kuszmann's Bazaar will take place on 18 August and will offer visitors an interesting programme every weekend.
