Wooden temple, Bodružal (UNESCO)

The Greek-Catholic wooden church of St. Nicholas in the village of Bodružal in the Svidník district is a jewel among churches. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful wooden churches in Slovakia. It was built in 1658 and in 2008 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with seven other wooden churches from the Slovak Carpathians.

The Church of St. Nicholas is a three-part log building with a richly articulated shingle roof and three towers. It also includes a separate bell tower, an adjacent churchyard and a wooden enclosure with a shingled roof and an entrance gate, which is covered by a conical roof with a poppy.

They attract attention in particular three church towers symbolizing the Holy Trinity. In the highest tower there are bells, which were used for military purposes at the beginning of the First World War - however, the inhabitants of the village replaced them in the second half of the 1920s. The oldest preserved bell bears the date of 1759.

The exterior appearance of the church is influenced by Byzantine sacral art. The area surrounds the log enclosure - a bunkhouse with a tiled roof to help you find this magical place.

The church was as miraculously saved during World War IIwhen he hit him Garnetthat didn't explode. The brave women of the village carried it out, risking their own lives, where it was defused by soldiers on a nearby hill. A reminder of this event can still be found in the roof of the church.

The interior decoration of the church is Baroque, painted in white and gold colours. In the nave on the north wall in front of the iconostasis is a rare restored painting from the second half of the 18th centurywhich depicts scenes from the Bible - the Apocalypse (Last Judgement) and the Crucifixion.
