The Alexander Duchnovič Theatre in Prešov was founded in 1945. It is a national theatre whose basic mission is to create conditions for the creation and public dissemination of theatrical works with a special focus on the development of the cultural life of Rusyns living in Slovakia.
In its beginnings, the theatre performed in Russian, which was also reflected in the dramaturgical repertoire - mostly Russian classics. In the 1950s, the theatre switched to Ukrainian and only in the 1980s to Ruthenian, following many requests from the local population.
The theatre is named after Alexander Duchnovich, which contributed significantly to the organizational and cultural development of the national life of Ukrainians in Hungary. He is considered a leading figure of the national movement in Eastern Slovakia and Podkarpatsk and often referred to as the first national teacher.
