The Observatory and Planetarium in Prešov is a specialized cultural-educational, professional-observational and scientific-research institution. Its main mission is the popularisation of astronomy in a wide range of forms.
The roots of astronomy in Prešov date back to the 15th century. Jedným z významných medzníkov bolo otvorenie súkromnej hvezdárne JUDr. Alexeja Duchoňa v roku 1932. V roku 1948 bola v budove vodárenskej veže otvorená the first folk observatory in Slovakia. Although the tower is no longer used for observatory purposes, it still houses two old telescopes, a Cooke York refractor and a Zeiss equatorial from 1932.
The latest important milestone in the history of the observatory in Prešov was October 4, 1984, when the observatory was opened planetariumwhich serves the general public to this day.
Observatory and planetarium in Presov at present organises a wide range of events and activities for individuals and groups – astronomické programy pre verejnosť, pozorovania, výstavy, krúžky, prednášky či stretnutia s osobnosťami.
