Solivar in Prešov is a national cultural monument, which belongs among the most important technical monuments in Slovakia. Je to unikátny komplex technických objektov na čerpanie a varenie soli zo soľanky, pochádzajúci zo 17. storočia.
The area of the salt factory "Starý solivar" from the turn of the 18th and 19th century has been preserved as a unique technical monument, which has no rival in the field of technical monuments of a similar kind in Slovakia.
Solivar is historically the most important salt deposit with a number of preserved technical monuments related to with salt mining. Already in the Middle Ages there were salt springs from which salt was extracted. In 1572, underground mining began here.
The flooding of the mines by underground water in 1752 required new technology. The mine was turned into an underground salt lake. This required the application of a previously unused technology - pumping brine in leather bellows by means of a gauze, a pump driven by horses or oxen.
One of the gáplov above the Leopold shaft from the 19th century has been preserved to this day and is open to the public. In Solivar it is possible to see beautiful renovated Salt Warehouse, brine storage tanks, so called. the chapel of St. Roch, the František brewhouse, the knocker and the chapel of St. Roch.
The Salt Warehouse building in Solivar burned down twice. After the first fire in 1819, the roof was reconstructed, a second floor and a clock tower were added. In the second fire on 18 May 1986, flames engulfed most of the building. In 2016, the Salt Warehouse was reopened to the public after extensive reconstruction. It no longer serves its original purpose of storing and distributing salt. In the renovated building, there is a historically precious central hall, from which you can access the individual rooms - the former salt chambers. These are divided into a museum section, a congress area and an economic section. After 30 years, thanks to extensive reconstruction, the national cultural monument Solivar in Prešov can be used again in its entirety and visitors can also get to know this interesting stage in the history of technology in Slovakia.
Visiting NKP Solivar is an experience that takes visitors back to the times when Prešov salt was above gold.
