Krivany, a village in the Sabinov district, is the birthplace of the well-known ethnologist, folklorist, collector and educator Ján Lazorík. A keen lover of traditions, he has collected a treasure trove of antiques, objects, materials and documents that map the traditions not only in Krivany, but also in the entire Šariš region. He also contributed to the creation of the exposition of the Centre of Folk Culture, which is definitely worth a visit.
The Centre of Folk Culture in Krivany is the only one of its kind in Slovakia. In the area of the centre there are several typical monuments of folk architecture, such as authentic wooden granaries or reconstructed classical residential cage inside furnished with folk furniture.
Also accessible is craftsman's yardwhere tools of the trade and technical tools related to various activities are displayed. In the centre and in the village there are wooden sculptures from the workshop of a local carver and in the building of the municipal office you can see exhibition of traditional costumes.
In Krivany you definitely don't want to miss a visit stone mill from the turn of the 17th and 18th century. The lower water mill from Kriviany was in the past driven by water fed to the top of a wooden wheel with blades called a trough. The grain was ground between two large stones that were specially adapted for this purpose. Later, it was ground on so-called 'rollers'.
During the mill's operation, there were many modernisations and reconstructions resulting from the needs of the time and the miller's craft. The mill was in working order until 1952. Maize meal, grits and electricity were produced for own use when there was no electricity in Krivany.
In 1984 the mill was registered to the list of technical monuments and in 1991 work began to save it. At present the mill offers possibility of camping and accommodation directly in its premises, especially in the summer months, in agreement with the leaders of the Association of Conservationists of the Upper Torys Kamenný mlyn.
