What happens when one of the most famous symbols of global pop art is combined with modern technology and the stories of the Prešov Region?
A space has been created in the Eperia shopping centre that transports visitors, for a few minutes, from the hustle and bustle of the shopping centre straight to the heart of the region. The Prešov Region regional tourism organisation is presenting a unique multimedia installation here in the form of Warhol’s iconic can, which is the first of its kind in Slovakia.
„Our aim was not to create yet another information panel or a traditional presentation. Our ambition was to create an interactive space that would capture people’s interest, make them stop and encourage them to explore the Prešov Region. We believe that Warhol’s tin can will become a place that inspires visitors to head straight to the region in search of new experiences,” says Martin Janoško, director of KOCR Prešov Region.
Warhol’s two-and-a-half-metre-tall tin can is a striking feature that cannot be overlooked. Behind its striking appearance, however, lies a modern multimedia space designed to introduce visitors to the stories of the Prešov Region.
Every visit is a different experience
A visit to the ‘can’ begins with a simple choice. On the touchscreen, each visitor selects a topic that interests them, and the LCD screens then guide them through the stories of the Prešov Region.
„They provide an insight into the work of Andy Warhol, one of the most significant figures in the world of modern art. They also showcase the destination The Land of the Rusyns and Andy Warhol, which links Warhol’s story to his Rusyn roots and authentic locations in north-eastern Slovakia. Other themes and playlists invite you to explore Land of Uniques, full of UNESCO World Heritage sites, castles and wooden churches, or to actively explore the region through cycling, hiking and outdoor adventures,” said Martin Janoško, director of the KOCR Prešov Region organisation.
Warhol’s tin can could be the first stop on a journey of discovery through the Prešov Region.
A symbol that brings together art, technology and travel
This exhibition naturally builds on the long-standing efforts of Prešov Region to showcase the legacy of Andy Warhol and his Rusyn roots. It also comes at a time when preparations are in full swing for one of this year’s most eagerly anticipated cultural events in Slovakia: the autumn reopening of the Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce following its extensive renovation.
The interactive multimedia tin is not just an original installation in a shopping centre. It is an invitation to discover the region where Andy Warhol’s roots lie, as well as the places that make up today’s Prešov Region.
„We see it as a new way of showcasing the Prešov Region, from the Tatra Mountains to the Poloniny. Our aim is to show visitors that this region has much more to offer than they might expect at first glance. We want it to become a travelling multimedia gallery that will showcase the stories, culture, nature and unique places of the Prešov Region both at home and abroad. If, after visiting it, it inspires someone to set out and explore our region, it will have served its purpose,“ added the organisation’s director, Martin Janoško.
An invitation to come inside
The installation will be on display at the Eperia shopping centre until the end of 2026. Every visitor can choose one of the themed projections and discover the Prešov Region even before they set off there.
The project was carried out by the Prešov Region Regional Tourism Organisation with financial support from the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Slovak Republic.
