SABINOV (9 June) - Juraj Andraščík, a young and talented artist who is proving his talent on a global scale in the field of modern communication and entertainment technologies, has created a sculpture of Sabina. He is not only its creator but also the investor of the whole realization. The figure of Sabina is shrouded in legends at the birth of Sabinovo and the acquisition of the privileges of a royal city.
In the creation of Sabinov there were women and love. Courage. And kings. Legends about the founding of the city say: love not only moves mountains, but also gives birth to cities. This is the direction in which the artist and designer Juraj Andraščík took in his composition. will present his work the general public today at 15:00 on the square in Sabinov. Socha Sabíny si podľa jej autora vyžiadala veľa síl a hodín práce. Konkrétne to bolo 489 hodín zvárania a brúsenia, 218 hodín modelovania a navrhovania geometrie, 221 hodín ohýbania 67 hodín príprav technických nákresov, 38 hodín vytvárania konštrukcie a osádzania sochy, 22 hodín úprav kamenného podstavca a 19 mesiacov celkových prác na soche. Socha je vytvorená z 1634 nerezových trojuholníkov a znázorňuje Sabínu ktorá podľa povesti zachraňuje kráľa Béla IV.
The legend of Sabine - the rescuer
Béla IV of the Hungarian Arpad family was the first king, to whom the legends attribute a share in the creation of the charming Sharis town on the banks of the Torysa River. As is known from history, he lost a battle with the Mongols at the Slaná River in April 1241, and as the soldiers of the feared Batu Khan persistently pursued him, he made his way to the Torysa River. The river is often swollen in spring and when the unfortunate king wanted to cross it, he began to drown in the wild waves. Where it came from, it came from, the rata came from the boat. It was sailed by the bold Sabina, who not only fished Béla out of the Torysa, but also provided for him properly at home. So well that the king temporarily left her not only his soaked fabrics, but she was even given a crown for safekeeping. The rescuer's wish, when he then did not want to save on the reward, was to be remembered - and the king fulfilled her wish by naming the town Sabinov. Which would be fitting, because the first written mention of this town five years after the water drama, back in 1248, anchors the name of the founder of our water rescue service, Sabina. In 1299, King Andrew III granted Sabinov the city rights that the nearby flourishing Spiš towns enjoyed.
When he was a nobleman for an armourbearer
However, the Šariš Castle near Sabinov has a different story about the founding of the town of Sabinov. In his well-known book of tales from 1829 it was recorded by Alojz Mednyanský. It has another character from the royal family in common with the previous one. At the Šariš castle dwelt the warlord Stephen, the younger brother of King Ludovít I called the Great. And although thanks to his brother's generosity he was able to devote himself to all sorts of pastimes, he had not yet met love. For that he had to wander to the residence of the unkind knight Tharczay alias Tory - to the castle of Kamenica. Predictably, he introduced himself to the guards by the name of his faithful armour-bearer Gergely. He had heard that the knight was highly suspicious of male visitors. For he had a beautiful daughter - Sabina - whom he guarded like an eye in his head. Duke Stephen had heard about Sabine from the castellan of Tharczay, with whom he had been drinking in the mysterious castle that evening. The latter portrayed the young lady to him so enthusiastically that Stephen wanted to see her. He took a chance and managed to catch a glimpse of Sabine as she served his father breakfast. It was a classic - fairytale love at first sight, but one that the devin's daddy didn't like. Nevertheless, the young people managed to meet and Stefan eventually planned Sabina's kidnapping. Stefan's faithful armourer Gergely played a major role in it, and although Sabina's poisoned armourer shot an arrow through his mighty shoulder during the kidnapping, he contributed greatly to the fact that his chief warlord, Stefan, and his love, Sabina, fell into each other's arms. On the spot where this happened, Stephen then founded the town of Sabinov. And the armourer Gergely, as we learn from a charming tale, also enlisted. The Gergely coat of arms granted by Stephen told of his heroism for generations. It bore an arrow-shot arm with a whip - and three roses. But before the proverbial bell would have rung about the fairy-tale happy ending, let us recall that Duke Stephen was born in December 1332, and for more than three decades Sabinov had the well-known royal privileges...
Therefore, it is quite possible that the two founding rumors about the proportion of ladies with first names Sabina had much older antecedents. Another legend derives the name of the town from a tribe of Slavic Sobs/Sabs, who were expelled from the fertile plains by Hunnish raiders, and some of the emigrants settled near Torysa, exactly where Sabinov is today.
The modern age also added glory to Sabinov. In a worse sense of the word, it was a disgraceful army prison, where famous black barons were imprisoned during the years of the communist regime. At its best, Sabinov is made visible by the legendary Oscar-winning film The Shop on the Corniche, which the great actors Ida Kaminská and Jozef Kroner filmed there in the last century. You can still find their fateful little shop on the river corniche today.
