The most beautiful cities of Slovakia. Prešov region on TOP ranks

PREŠOV (9 November 2016) - The public has chosen the most beautiful towns and villages in Slovakia in a nationwide vote, and also voted for the Mayor of Slovakia 2016. Cities and municipalities of the Presov Region got excellent rankings, we also have the Mayor of the Year 2016! 

From the beginning of April until the end of October, the public decided on the beauty of Slovak towns and villages and the best mayors/mayors on the nationwide information portal slovakregion.sk. Users could vote every hour, it was also possible to vote for several towns and villages within one hour.

How did the Prešov region turn out?

They are small, but beautiful and special. Rich in history and culture, with a unique atmosphere. Such are the three towns of the Prešov region, which have been ranked excellent in the public vote for the most beautiful town in Slovakia. The second place belongs to Levoča, just behind her with in third place placed by Bardejov. Nice eighth place was missed Sabinovu. In the top fifteen, Prešov was 14th. The most beautiful town this year was Spišská Nová Ves.

In the category of municipalities was awarded the seventh place from the Prešov Region to the village Rokytov (9235 votes) in the Bardejov district and the fourteenth place was occupied by Clay from the district of Vranov nad Topľou. The first place belongs sovereignly to the municipality of Smižany (district SNV, 20 541 votes).

V Prešov Region also has a Slovak Mayor for 2016which is Vladimir Ledecky - Mayor of Spišský Hrhov. Last year the village became the Village of the Year 2015 and is one of the most developed villages in Slovakia. It boasts high employment, exemplary coexistence of majority and Roma minority, reconstructed village centre with works of local folk craftsmen. There is also a manor house, a historic stone arch bridge from the 16th century, an early Gothic church and a giant wooden roller-skating rink listed in the Guinness Book of Records.

What not to miss when visiting the most beautiful places?

Historic Centre - UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. Most of the historic houses are in the central Master Paul Square, which is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe.

The Cage of Shame - once a place for punishing minor offences, today an essential part of the square in front of the town hall and a unique tourist attraction.

Town Hall - with impressive arcades and a façade adorned with symbols of civic virtues - temperance, prudence, valour, patience and justice. Today it is an exhibition of the Spiš Museum. Inside you will also find a rare chandelier - a gift from Maria Theresa, a knight's staff, a painting of the White Lady of Levoča and a piece of her dress, a derech, or a wheel for breaking ribs.

Church of St. James - The greatest attraction of the 14th century church (UNESCO) is the main altar from the workshop of Master Paul with a height of 18.62 m, which is the highest late Gothic wooden altar in the world.

Master Paul's House - on the historical square you will find the house where the famous Master Paul of Levoča lived. Inside there is an exhibition dedicated to the life of the master and replicas of his works.

Marian Mountain - dominating the town with the majestic Basilica Minor of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.

BARDEY

Town Hall Square - since 2000 Bardejov has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Town Hall Square with its picturesque 46 townhouses and basilica is a feast for the eyes.

Bazilika minor sv. Egídia – pôvodne gotický chrám zo 14. storočia je plný vzácnych sakrálnych pamiatok vrátane unikátnej kolekcie 11 krídlových oltárov.

Mestská radnica – ďalšia architektonická perla Bardejova, pod ktorú sa podpísalo viacero významných staviteľov. Sídli v nej Šarišské múzeum.

Socha kata – v lete 2016 pribudla uprostred námestia originálna socha kata. Neďaleko je aj Katov dom, kde kat býval a v kostole mal svoju lavicu.

Židovské suburbium - stará synagóga v Bardejove patrí medzi klenoty synagogálnej architektúry na Slovensku. Predstavuje unikátny typ deväťklenbovej synagógy.

Bardejovské Kúpele – ukrývajú malebný skanzen a  kúpele s krásnou kolonádou, zrekonštruovanými i novými liečebnými domami ponúkajú rozsiahly liečený a wellness program.

V okolí určite stojí za pozornosť aj hrad Zborov a unikátne drevené kostolíky, ktorých je v bardejovskom okrese hneď deväť (Krivé, Lukov, Kožany, Tročany atď.)

SABINOV

Oscar city – v r. 1965 sa v Sabinove natáčal film Obchod na korze, ocenený soškou Oscara. Udalosť pripomína socha Oscara s gombíkom. Vedľa repliky Obchodu na korze (na námestí) v budove informačného centra nájdu návštevníci expozíciu venovanú oscarovému filmu.

Socha Sabíny – čelo námestia zdobí nerezová socha Sabíny, podľa ktorej mesto dostalo svoje meno.

Chrám Sv. Jána Krstiteľa – gotický chrám z prelomu 15. a 16. storočia s renesančnou zvonicou z r. 1657

Mestské hradby a múzeum v bašte – Sabinov bol v r. 1405 povýšený na slobodné kráľovské mesto, ktoré chránilo hradobné opevnenie. V priestoroch stredovekej bašty, ktorá bola súčasťou opevnenia mesta, sídli múzeum so zbierkou maliarskych diel a národopisnou expozíciou.

V tesnej blízkosti mesta sa nachádza rekreačné stredisko Drienica - Lysá, ktoré slúži aj pre vyznávačov zimnej turistiky a lyžovania.
