Church of St. George, Spišská Sobota

The Church of St. George in Spišská Sobota is the oldest building on the square and at the same time the most important monument in this town.

Some fragments of the original late Romanesque church, which dates back to the mid-12th century, have been preserved - the south portal, the outer walls of the nave and the square tower. In the 15th and early 16th centuries, the church was equipped with Gothic decoration with five Gothic altars.

Main Altar of St. George from 1516 is the work of Master Paul of Levoča. To the left of the main altar is the oldest altar of the Virgin Mary from 1464, but its author is unknown. On the Altar of St. Anthony the Hermit from 1503 there are exceptional paintings on the wing panels.

From the 17th century there is a dominant organ, an organ case and a Baroque pulpit from the workshop of P. Gross.

In the immediate vicinity of the Church of St. George in Spišská Sobota there is a bell tower, which was built in 1588 - 1589.
