Jewish cemetery in Bardejov

Bardejov Jewish cemetery is situated in the wider northern circle of the town near the main road towards Bardejovské Kúpele. The cemetery consists of two parts: an older one, where the oldest tombstones date back to the end of the 18th century, and a newer one.

In the Jewish cemetery in Bardejov there are approximately 1 000 graves. Also buried here are descendants of the famous Hasidic Halberstam family from Nowy Sacz. In the middle of the cemetery, in a small brick building (the so-called ohel), are the graves of Moshe (1848-1903), Rachel Fajga and their son Yechiel Natan (1866-1934) Halberstam.

Most of the older tombstones are decorated with symbolic motifs of animals (lions, deer, birds, unicorns), crowns or candlesticks, while the younger tombstones are mostly decorated with the motif of the sad willow and the Star of David. Blessing hands symbolizing the Kohen family and pitchers characteristic of the Levite family are also frequent.

The Jewish cemetery in Bardejov was recently thoroughly renovatedwhich makes this unique complex a worthy place of remembrance of the extinct Jewish community of Bardejov.
