Get to know the beautiful places in the Prešov region, immortalised in photographs by the famous Slovak photographer Jano Štovka (MQEP).

Unique places

On its territory, the Prešov Region has almost 4000 major and minor monuments, four of the seven UNESCO sites, the most restored castles, 27 unique wooden churches, royal towns, open-air museums, museums and galleries with diverse expositions. That is why it is rightly called the Region of Cultural Monuments. See the places immortalised by the photographer Jano Štovka and get inspired for trips.

The Greek-Catholic wooden church of St. Nicholas, Bodružal (UNESCO)

A wooden temple with a turbulent destiny that is forever inscribed in wood. On a tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can see the traces of a grenade that passed right through the roof of the temple, still preserved today. The temple can be found in the Svidník district.

Manor house in Humenne

The beautiful interior of the manor house also includes Maria Theresa's room. It has an unusual octagonal shape and hides five secret doors. The manor houses the Vihorlat Museum, which offers other interesting expositions. Near the manor house you will find an open-air museum, which will take you to the environment of the picturesque village of Upper Zemplín.

Open-air museum in Svidník

Just walk in and you will find yourself in the past. The open-air museum of the Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník is an experience for all ages. On an area of 11 hectares there are 50 objects of folk architecture, thatched cottages, a mill, a tavern or a wooden church. Wonderful! Read more

Zborov Castle

The Gothic castle of Zborov was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries as a protection of the trade route to Poland. There is also a trail leading to the castle in the Bardejov district from Zborov through an avenue of ancient oaks. If you have had enough of the hustle and bustle of the city, you will recharge your batteries here.

Orthodox synagogue in Prešov

The interior of the synagogue is decorated with beautiful ornamental paintings, making it one of the most beautiful synagogues in Slovakia. It is still used as a house of prayer. It also functions as a museum with an exhibition of the Museum of Jewish Culture.

Red Monastery Museum

The Carthusian Monastery in the picturesque Pieniny Mountains hides gothic treasures and valuable expositions. Here you can see the extremely rare herbarium of the flying monk Cyprian from 1766, who actually lived in the monastery. Don't miss the Dunajec River cruise and a visit to the beautiful Pieniny Mountains.

Kežmarok Castle

The town castle with numerous expositions, also known as the starting point of the first tourist trip to the High Tatras. It includes an exhibition of historical vehicles, firefighting equipment, a historical pharmacy and a hunger room! During the summer, many events take place in the castle and in the castle courtyard.

Altar of Master Paul from Levoča and the historical centre of Levoča (UNESCO)

The highest Gothic wooden altar in the world (18.62 m) can be found in the Church of St James. In addition, the Town Hall, the Cage of Shame and in total more than 300 cultural and historical monuments behind the almost completely preserved system of the city walls. This is Levoča with its wealth, which is not lacking among the UNESCO monuments. Above Levoča you cannot miss [trip:12009;Marianska hora] - a pilgrimage site with a majestic basilica.

Wooden Church of St. Anna, Tatranská Javorina

The atypical wooden church was built between 1902 and 1903 by Prince Kristian Kraft Hohenlohe, a wealthy German nobleman. Despite the fact that he was a Protestant, he had a Roman Catholic church built. The location of the church creates a beautiful scenery with the High Tatras in the background.

Church of St. George with bell tower and altar of M. Paul, Spišská Sobota

The historical centre of Spišská Sobota is a town conservation area, decorated with burgher houses, a bell tower and the dominant feature of the square, the Church of St. George from 1273 with a precious altar from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. From Spišská Sobota it is a short hop to AquaCity Poprad or visit the town's attractions [trip:1652;Poprad]. But more about that next time...
