Gánovce
The village of Gánovce is about 3 kilometres from Poprad. The first written mention dates back to 1317 as Villa Ganau. However, the first inhabitants appeared in the locality of Ganovce more than 105 000 years ago. During stone quarrying in 1926, Koloman Koky, a gunsmith, found cast of the cranial cavity. The strange find went into the hands of Jaroslav Petrboek, who believed that it was the discovery of a part of a mammoth or an elephant. Only post-war research showed that the find is very rare and is evidence of Neanderthal life under the Tatras. The scientist Emanuel Vlček even found that she is a woman aged around 40. Other remains of ancient life were also found in the locality - casts of wild boar, rhinoceros and predator skulls, imprints of plants, remnants of fireplaces, a cast of a tortoise shell, etc. The story of the Neanderthal Agy also refers to this extremely significant place. "Animals and prehistoric people had a source of water and sustenance at the hot spring. But besides work, Neanderthals also found time for fun and education. Aga, a Neanderthal who enjoyed exploring the nature around her and did not hesitate to introduce others to its secrets, took care of that."
